What to expect from German payroll

Your employment contract states a gross salary. Your employer withholds wage tax and four social insurance contributions before paying you, and pays a similar amount into the insurances on top. For a typical full-time employee the net salary is roughly 55 to 70 percent of gross, depending on income and tax class. Use the calculator for an exact estimate and the tax class guide to check that the class on your payroll is the right one.
